Childhood Obesity
What is childhood obesity? According to the online research childhood obesity is a condition in which a child is significantly overweight for his or her age and weight. Childhood obesity already becomes a serious problem. Did you know in the United States one of five children have obesity? Did you know that when children grow up they would become at risk for heart disease which is the NO.1 cause of death in the United States? This essay will describe proposed solutions to the problem of childhood obesity. Finally this essay will propose the best solution and explain its benefits.
According to the article “Local Government Seek to Reduce Obesity in Kids,” by Kimberley Leonard, based on the 30 percent childhood obesity rate in Puerto Rico, the government introduced a new law to reduce the childhood obesity. The law was introducing on Monday. It asks teachers identify children who are obese and refer them to health department advisers to determine the cause of obesity and create a diet and exercise plan, and follow up every four weeks. After six months if a child does not lose weight, the parents can be fined up to $500, and if another six months passed, and the children still shows no significant weight loss, the parents can be fined up to $800.
According to the article “Local Government Seek to Reduce Obesity in Kids,” Taxing sugary soda and banning the sale of large sodas could also help fight childhood obesity. According to “Sugary Drinks and Obesity Fact Sheet” A typical 20-ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and upwards of 240 calories. A 64-ounce fountain cola drink could have up to 700 calories. People who drink this “liquid candy” do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food and do not compensate by eating less. The United States, some laws have been made at the local level. For example, the city of Berkeley, California, became the first to pass a law that taxes sugary drinks like sodas. Lawmakers in San Francisco considered a similar law that ultimately was rejected. New York Mayor Michael Bloombery also tried to ban the sale of large soda, but the law ultimately was blocked by the State judge.
However, in my opinion, the best way to reduce childhood obesity is government should offer resources for every school, help children create a diet and exercise plan in school during the gym period, and create healthy meal for students. When I was in high school, during the gym period, a lot of students not get exercise at all, especially the overweight people. They just wear the uniform, so these people just stay on the side and watch other people. So, school should determine the cause of obesity for each obese student. Then during the gym period, school can provide different exercise for different people, so different student will have different way to do during the gym time, because different people have different reason to get obese. School should also provide fitness equipment for student who needs exercise. Secondly, I remember in my high school they provide fast food every day, and there is too much soda machine in everywhere of the school. So I think school should not provide fast food for student, school should create different healthy meal for different days every week. In the health meal, school should include different fruit and vegetable in the meal. Finally School should not provide soda machine in the school. In the end, the best way to reduce childhood obesity is school can do better to help students.
